Building Links – How to submit and choose the best web directories

Almost every web master now knows that building backlinks to your web site is essential to obtaining high rankings in the search engines. Web directories are a part of building backlinks, but not all web directories will benefit your web site and some web directory listings will benefit you more than others. If you do a little checking first you can save yourself time and money and get the most backlink bang for your buck.

To check a web directory for quality, start by installing the Google toolbar. The Google toolbar can help you to obtain good information about a web site. After you install the Google toolbar, go into settings, then options, click on the More tab at the top and check the PageRank and Page Info button. Once enabled go to a directory homepage of a site to which you are considering submission. In the Google toolbar hold you mouse over the PageRank button. This will give you the web page’s PageRank on a scale of none to 10. A PageRank of five or higher is generally considered a good quality directory.

If you type site:www.directoryname.com in the toolbar search box this will show you the number of pages that Google has indexed for the directory web site. If a high percentage of pages show up as supplemental results this could be a sign of a weak directory. Supplemental results are web pages that Google considers to be of less importance and are kept in a different index.

Using the Google toolbar go back to the directory homepage and click the PageRank button in the toolbar and select cached snapshot of page. Take note of the date- this was the last time the page was crawled by Googlebot. Browse to the category in the directory that you want to submit to. See that the page is in the Google cache using the toolbar. You can check to see if the page is indexed in other search engines using the cache:www.site.com command in the search box. You want to submit to directories that are crawled and updated regularly.

You can also use the PageRank Button to check the webpage backlinks. Backlinks are used to determine a web page’s importance and look for quantity and quality of backlinks from a variety of sources when evaluating web pages for links. Go to some of the web sites that are in the directory that you are evaluating and see if the directory links show up in the backlinks of the webpage that you browsed to. If the backlinks show up when you use the backlinks button this is usually a sign of a good quality web directory.

When submitting to web directories use a long term strategic approach. For example if you plan on submitting to 100 directories submit to them over a period of six months or about four per week. We always suggest obtaining links from other sources as well such as blogs, forums, and testimonials.

When submitting to directories make sure your site is complete and is relevant to the directory category that you submit to. It can hurt a directory if they consistently link to low quality sites. So to ensure that your submission does not get denied or delayed in the process make sure your website is relevant and complete.

If possible use your keyword in the title anchor text, some directory owners are lenient and will allow this. When writing your description, make sure to use as much keyword phrase rich text as you can. Remember you want to point good content at your web site’s content.

If you have a web site and you are trying to optimize for different sub web pages within your site see if the directory owner will allow you to deep link or link to a page other than your homepage. As long as the content is relevant most directories do not have a problem with this. As a rule I try to link 15%-20% to internal pages in my sites.

Remember when building links to go slow and steady and from a variety of sources.

Good Link Bait

Been listening to some podcast trying to come up with some good link bait. Started a contest on some of the seo forums to try to guess the next pr update, giving away homepage links on my web directory.

I'm glad Google has a handle on this, now that I have good serps I no longer rely on adwords, but for certain products I'm sure this was a problem. Google puts a lot of effort into this or getting a bad reputation would probably destroy them.

Google Webmaster Tools

Google Webmaster Tools
I'm really starting to like the sitemaps tool. Think of site maps as a way for you to talk to Google and for Google to let you know if there is a problem.
I think one of the hardest things about SEO is maintaining. Getting your site to the top of the search engines is one thing but keeping a site in at the top of the serps is quite another. There is only so much you can learn about SEO and then you basically level out. I will tell you a lot of the thrill is gone. Even with great serps you will be surprised at how little traffic you really get. Don't get me wrong there are some great diamonds in the rough and it is totally worth while. But keep in mind that the internet it takes time to learn and it is not that easy to get rich.

10 things I hate about my SEO clients

10) When they start the conversation off with we are just starting out and don't have much money (this really motivates me)
9) Meet Brian our web designer
8) I have a gambling web site or I have a porn web site
7) What do you mean we are under penalty?
6) But we only pay $3.95 per month for web hosting and we are quite happy
5) I've already spent $5000, why should I trust you?
4) We get like a million hits per month, (but how many unique visitors do you get?) I don't know we get like a million hits per month
3) What do you mean I have to have my site re-done and the site won't index?
2) But we really like flash, it's so pretty
1) The owners son does the web site

If this becomes widely adopted, this could change the way we shop.

Google Accessible Search

I kind of freaked out at 1st about this, my serps were higher here and I thought that maybe some filters were not applied on this version. I read and little more and realized that because I have picture and use alt text for them that was why I am ranking higher is this version of Google.

One of the things that bugs me about blogspot is no stats and I guess that's where these guys come in. Seems like a pretty cool free service. I'm curios because I am seeing pageview via adsense stats. It will be interesting to see how people end up here.

Visual Page Rank Update in Progress

Looks like Google is updating page rank and backlinks. My main site did ok and stayed the same but this blog seems to have take a hit. The blog is now a pr0 and none of the backlinks show. I've added some since the last update to no avail. I wonder what I did to mess myself up, maybe to many links back to the main site. The blog was a pr3 and I was hoping to get a pr5, oh well back to square 1.

Google AdSense

Google AdSense
Some day when I have more time, I'm going to try to make real money with AdSense. For now I make about enough to pay for my Verizon wireless for my laptop. I'm pretty suprised at how much I get per click which tells me the bids are getting pretty high. I'm also seeing an increase in page views here on the blog, it is amazing what posting every few days plus a few good incomming links will do.

Google Analytics
I'm really starting to like google analytics, I don't think I'll ever come close to using all of its features but I do like the insight I gain and it is becomming my favorite over web trends.

New York Colocation, Data Center, Disaster Recovery Facility New York City

I can almost kick myself for not going into the New York market sooner. I've had the page up for almost two weeks and I'm seeing good traffic and conversion from the page even though I'm not ranked that high for my main keyword phrases. The content again is saving my butt and I'm getting good results for very specific keyword phrase searches. The same is true for Atlanta but since it is a smaller market I do not get as much traffic. I'm going to be going into more markets, that is going to be the best way to pick up traffic. I've found that is easier to get more traffic with more pages rather than to try to squeeze more out of one page. Content really seems to be king these days. I am still finding links, I try to keep a steady pace, I don't think it look very natural if all the sudden you start to slow down or stop. I did just put up a new ezine article for disaster recovery, I'll post a link once the article is approved.

will I ever stop upgrading?

One of the joys/pains of owning a colocation company is the constant upgrading. It is very hard to get ahead, it seems like I'm always buying a new server, firewall, switch or something. I would love 6 months on not having to buy an expensive piece of hardware, YEAH right!
On my list of upgrades for the next few months- another spam applicane, firewalls, layer3 switches, exchange infrastructure, ssl vpn gateway(waiting for the price to come down a bit and to find one with all the feature I want either way it's going to cost me)
I'm also moving into a new office next month, that will be some more shopping I'm sure.

Add more pages to get more traffic

I'm finding it very hard to get more traffic on the site. If I want more traffic the best way is to add another page. I've been adding some pages for services in different cities and that seem to be slowly pick things up. I have no faith in the keyword inventory tools any longer. I find that specific keyword phrases are the ones that pay off.

My new firewall

I'm in the process of getting a new firewall. I'm gonig to try the Juniper netscreen. I'm frustrated with alot of the firewalls on the market, I like what I'm hearing about the netscreen I'm curious to see if it does all that they say it will.

Adding Ezine RSS

Tork's Blog [BLOGGER PREVIEW]
I'm adding my ezine rss feed, these are article that I've written this year, it kind of mucks up the template a bit but it seemed like a fun thing to do. Not sure if I'll do this with the main site, not reall sure the best way to add it since I do cover a vaiety of topics.
As for the update, not much ever became of it, I was hoping to see a backlink update. I curious to see what Google will count.

Beginings of an update

I saw some of my new pages starting to show page rank on some data centers, but it had rolled back by this morning. I'm curious to see if they do a back-link export, I'm been slow and steady at my link building from a variety of sources and I'm curious which will get picked up. I'm also finally in dmoz after over a year of trying to get in. I found an active category and resubmitted and to my surprise got in for a good category. Dmoz is a great trusted link source and the Google directory is based on sites that are in dmoz.

Not as much traffic as you would think

Most of the keyword phrases that I go after I'm ranked well. I wonder how accurate the keyword inventory tools are? I'm getting good relevant traffic, just not the volume I was hoping for.

Another cool freebie, I think you have to have an ad words accout. I still use my ad words for very specific keywords that the site is not currently optimized for. I would request an invitation and try it out they have some very interesting stats.

Private Data Center Cages

Private Data Center Cages
I've now included a Columbus data center photo tour on the Fast PC Net web site. I’m trying to increase conversions from out of area. Unfortunately the pages load slowly because of the java navigation menus. This has never been a problem but I can see how it is one now. I probably will not be able to do this with the Houston data center. I’m going to start offering colocation services in more cities in the very near future.

Houston Colocation

Colocation, Internet Data Center, Disaster Recovery Facility Houston, Texas
I’m now offering colocation service in downtown Houston via Internap facilities. My web site has been ranking very well for data center and colocation keywords. I’ve been getting a lot of inquiries about collocating server down here in Houston, but have been hesitant because most of the data centers in Houston are not really data centers and are missing what I feel are key feature or are at risk for flood and wind damage during a hurricane which is just a matter of time until we get hit.
By being able to offer colocation services in Houston I can now better serve my local clients and I hope to be able to gain newer and diverse clients. I’ve consulted with several clients over the year who use Internap data centers. I’ve had nothing but great experiences with Internap. They are one of the few to really have their act together.

Colocation Data Center, Disaster Recovery Services, and SEO - Fast PC Networks

Colocation Data Center, Disaster Recovery Services, and SEO - Fast PC Networks
With the google big daddy update traffic has really picked up and I’m seeing most of my traffic coming from organic google results. I noticed my homepage was text heavy and did not really have a data center picture except for the header so I added a wide open floor space shot to give the page a bit more relevance. It is hard to sell 2 services on one page; I’m not sure how well this will convert if they land on the home page. I may have to convert the home page to an internet consulting page and land relevant clients to their relevant inside pages.
The three areas that I would like to focus on this year are colocation, SEO, and spam filtering services. The spam filter has become such a commodity item that I’m practically giving it away. Colocation is a commodity but solutions grow and there are managed services. If costs are controlled it can be profitable, but it is very competitive. SEO is a lot of fun for me to do but I can not afford to give it away, there is a lot of time involved that clients don’t seem to want to pay for. They just want to give you $500 and be #1 and make tens of thousand of dollars, if it were only that simple. Once you understand that there are no short cuts you will see how simple it is. There is plenty of upfront work to do building the site, content, and link building. Once you have a site that generates clients and sales leads it is well worth the effort. Eventually you will have an automated machine that you will have to maintain but it will take less effort over time.

Also directories are an easy way to get incoming links. Make sure you read the guidelines before you submit your web site. 2006 looking foward

I'm really looking forward to 2006, business is good and prospects are looking better all the time. We are looking to expand our data center service offerings. The spam filtering service seems to be picking up too. I can't remember the lasat time I looked forward to the start of a new year.
Happy and safe New Year to all,
